spacer spacer The Foundation for the Environment & Urban Life (“The Fund”) was established in 2006. It has offices in Englewood, New Jersey (just outside New York City), and Berkeley, California.

The Fund’s mission, objective, strategy and target audiences are straight-forward.
  • The Fund’s mission is to fund projects and programs with promise of significant local or broader-reaching impacts on environmental quality and urban life.

  • The Fund’s objective is to use its financial resources and the skills and experience of its Founder, Advisory Board Members and staff, to leverage the activities of other organizations that will devise, develop and implement programs and innovations that will improve the environmenl and urban life.

  • The Fund’s strategy is to focus on groups that implement and/or promote innovative activities that will benefit the environment and urban life. We expressly seek new ideas, and recognize the power of new ideas and communications about new ideas and their impacts. We are primarily concerned with social and “social business” programs, as opposed to technological or other innovative activities. We seek to support “social entrepreneurs” whose energy and passion can make visions happen. Endeavors that integrate efforts of the public, private and non-profit sectors have particular appeal, as do programs with multiple phases that allow for the demonstration of promise and expansion on that promise. We are also interested in supporting communications programs (e.g., media) that will create wider awareness of environmental and urban issues, initiatives that demonstrate innovative approaches, etc. In selected situations we are also willing to provide funds that will be leveraged in wider fund-raising efforts for more comprehensive programs.

  • The target audiences for programs that we support can be local, regional, national or international, as appropriate to the specific initiative. We prefer projects that can gain broad attention.
The Founder and several of the Advisory Board Members of The Fund have particular expertise in urban planning and public transportation, as well as backgrounds and considerable experience in related environmental, social and environmental justice, city planning, community development, and other allied fields.
